Animals in the strangest places.

I don’t think that I will ever cease to be amazed at the places and methods by which people transport animals here. It’s fairly common to see a tricycle go by with the side car jam packed full of pigs or maybe loaded up with crates of chickens.

At the airport on our way from Manila to Naga there was a stack of boxes all holding roosters- fighting roosters who were crowing expectantly waiting to be released from their pyramid of cockfighting glory.

A couple of days ago I saw a trike drive by laden with dead chickens. The inside (this was a normal passenger trike) had piles of dead white chickens, while there were still more tied onto the outside, hanging by their feet. The whole thing looked a bit like a demented, feathery, white christmas tree on wheels.

Today I passed a jeep with a goat on the roof. It was attached by a thin rope from the collar to the roof rack. I’ve never seen a goat brace itself before, but that’s exactly what this little nanny goat did when the jeep started into motion.

I’m sure tomorrow I’ll see another interesting display of animal travel- perhaps a dog in a bicycle basket. The guys at the bike shop suggested that I get a bike with a basket so that I could ride around with my (future) cat. I’m pretty sure that they were joking.
