Typhoon Durian (Reming)

I don’t know it it has made news at home, but we just got hit with a very bad typhoon here in the last couple of days. It hit Bicol directly and I have heard that the eye of the storm went over my town, as well as Naga City and our provincial capital (where my host family from training lives). The storm has been classified “super typhoon” and was at Category 5 level when it hit land in Bicol.

Luckily enough, I left town about 36 hours before the typhoon hit land and am in no danger. I’m not sure what condition my house and schools are in, communication with bicol has been impossible for the last 24 hours or so.

  1. I’m logged in as Uncle Rob but it’s actually Debora, I’ve been thinking how much Vanessa would appreciate the fact that the cruise control does indeed work on the Subauru and Cleo only extened my latest trip to Asheville by 90 minutes! I’m happy you are safe and personally untyphooned but I hope your new friends and adopted families are also out of harms way. Sorry you are being tortured with holiday music but just think – you don’t have to eat the mussels being served at the Resnick residence tonight! lol! I love you and miss you, my sweet, sweet girl.

  2. I sent you an email but don’t know if you got it. I to was worried about you, and the big big BIG, wind, glad to hear you are OK, and all your friends. I do think about you, and pray for you to be safe. Love you, Kathleen

  3. Goodmorning sweetie, thank you for the links to news on the storm, I am glad you and Caty are safe. hope all f your other PCV in the area of the storm are safe as well. Were Fred and Shirley in the region tht was so hard hit, the names of the towns all sound familiar.

  4. Glad to hear from everybody. As far as I know, the other volunteers are safe and sound. Most of the casualties from this typhoon are related to the mudslides of volcanic ash on Mt. Mayon, and none of us live that close to teh volcano to be in danger. I’m not sure how extensive the damage is in general, but I talked to one of the volunteers near me on the phone yesterday and he said it was pretty bad, 95% of the houses in his town were damaged. He and his wife live in a nipa hut, and it was one of the few that didn’t get destroyed in the storm. I will let you know more when I do. I love you all!
